Doctors’ Day History
The first time doctor’s day was observed on 28 March 1933, in Winder, Georgia. It involved mailing of cards of good wishes to doctors and their spouses, flowers for late doctors and dinner at Dr. and Mrs. William T. Randolph’s home. Then, the Barrow County Alliance adopted the concept of tribute to doctors. And the idea was introduced to the Georgia State Medical Alliance in 1933 by the president of the Barrow County Alliance, Mrs. E. R. Harris of Winder.
Next, at the annual state meeting in Augusta, Georgia On 10 May 1934, the resolution was adopted. Later the Alliance president, Mrs. J. Bonar White introduced this resolution to the Women’s Alliance of the Southern Medical Association at its 29th annual meeting. From then on, the Doctor’s Day has become the synonym to the Southern Medical Association Alliance.
Then, the United State Senate and the house of representatives passed S.J. RES. #366 amid the 101st United States Congress. And President Bush approved this resolution assigning March 30 as a national Holiday as a tribute to the contribution of doctors in the society.
Later, Dr. Marion Mass alongside Dr. Kimberly Jackson and Dr. Christina applied to officially change doctor’s day into doctors week in March 2017.
