How to Write an Analytical Essay
1. Select an Appropriate Topic
If you are writing this for a class, then your teacher will surely assign you a topic to write about. But if you have to select a title for your essay, then you have to choose it very carefully and with fresh eyes.
If you are writing about a historical event, then try to concentrate on the most important things that happened and analyze the essential parts of it. Or if you are writing about scientific research, then follow the scientific methods to analyze the results and findings.
2. Brainstorm About the Topic
I know that you may not immediately know that what your thesis statement should be, or which points should you analyze and which points you should put aside. That is why brainstorming for a short period of time is not a big deal. Doing some brainstorming can help you discover what you think about your topic. And brainstorming will help you make a good map or diagram of the given topic. For making your essay look great to brainstorm and look for some phrases, hooks, and new methods to start your essay to impress your readers.
3. Come up With an Effective Thesis Statement
The thesis statement is the sentence that summarizes the claim you will make at the beginning of your essay and your whole essay will depend on your thesis statement because it will tell your reader what your topic is about. In an analytical essay, the writer must create an argument or should make a claim in the thesis statement of their essay so that they should be able to analyze the topic with certain pieces of evidence.
4. Find Supporting Evidence
For writing an analytical essay, you may need some evidence to prove your claims right. Depending on your assignment, you may need to work only on primary sources( the texts you are analyzing) but for proving your claim, you have to take some help from different sources and books. Good evidence supports your claim and makes your argument more convincing. And remember that your evidence should be relevant to your topic because you can not bring anything for proving your claims that are not relevant to that claim at all.
5. Look for Sample Essays
For writing an essay, students must follow two main steps in writing it. Firstly, they have to gather a lot of relevant evidence for proving their claims. Secondly, they have to look after some well written and samples of essays. Obviously, sample essays are the best source of getting more familiar with a difficult and very different type of essay. Not only in writing but in other skills also students must review the samples of them to get to know about their style, structure, and the way they have analyzed it.
6. Create an Outline
Creating an outline will help you structure your essay and write it easily. When you create an outline for your essay, you become to know what to add and what to eliminate from your writing piece. And by the help of creating outline writers notice grammatical errors and spelling errors and furthermore rectify them to make their essay seem clear and organized. 7. Proofread your Essay Before Submission
An essay that contains a lot of errors generally gets a lower point than one that has been proofread and polished by the writer. Once more look for spelling mistakes, punctuation marks errors, or any other grammatical errors while reviewing your essay. The proofreading essay will decide whether your essay is able to be submitted or not. If you have committed a lot of mistakes, then you have to edit it but if you find everything fine then your essay is ready to be submitted.
