The Top 8 Advanced Study Tips to Boost Your Grades

1. Set Goals

There have been various researches on setting goals to successfully effect positive changes. Notably, it is the first step to turning invisible into the visible. So, it is essential to reveal to yourself the things you want or have to achieve. However, before setting your goals, you should ask yourself if the goal you are setting is realistic and worthy enough. If it is worth your time and effort, give you best.

2. Make Study Plan and Take Regular Breaks

As far as setting a goal is beneficial, making a study plan can also help you in boosting your grades. Also, you become more productive if you know when what you have to study and you don’t get overwhelmed anytime. In addition, after each study session, you should take breaks and do some physical activities.

Moreover, the Pomodoro Technique is also helpful. According to the Pomodoro Technique, you should do an intense study for 25 minutes, then, take a 5 minutes break. Because your brain works at its maximum for 25 to 40 minutes.

3. Corson’s Technique

Dale R. Corson was the eighth president of the Cornel University (famous for the cornel notetaking system). According to Dale Corner, students (in science or mathematics major) have to work really hard to crack problems when they go through their textbooks, however, there are times when you can’t crack the problems on your own. Then, you need to ask somebody else (either professor or any classmate) for the help, professors are the better choice, though.

So, before you go to your professor, you should ask yourself,”What is it that I don’t understand?” That means you need to pick the part of the problem you don’t understand, not the whole problem which will help you put a better impression on the professor with your effort and preparation. In addition, you learn the art of recognizing confusion. Hence, the next time you don’t understand something, use the Corson Technique for a better assistance from your professor.

4. Spaced Repetition

Basically, it is a system that you use when you have learned something well. According to it, you have to study things at increasingly bigger intervals of time. Also, it is a very efficient way of studying that helps you with how your brain works. So, you have to recall the information after some time when probably you are going to forget that consistently.

5. The Loci Method

Originally, the Method of Loci, which is a memorization technique, goes back to the Roman and greek time. Basically, you have to associate certain information with different rooms of a house to learn and memorize. So, it helps you enhance your memory using visualizations.

6. Hacking Akrasia

Akrasia is a term that goes back as far as Plato. Essentially, it is ”the lack of command over oneself”. That means you work against your better judgement through the weakness of will or rather a certain kind of failure to stick to your plans. To hack Akrasia, there are various ways such as

  1. Use a commitment device such as Beeminder, HabitBull, The Habit Hub and Habitica.
  2. Add a short-term reward to completing your task.

7. The Pomodoro Technique

According to the Pomodoro technique, you should do an intense work of 25 minutes then take a break of 5 minutes. Technically, it helps you to complete your tasks without getting tired and frustrated while working. Also, you can improve the Pomodoro Technique to make it work at its peak for you such as

  1. Experimenting different time intervals such as Beeminder’s Tocks (setting the timer for 45 minutes intense work and 15 minutes break)
  2. Using a piece of paper next to you while studying to write down what distracts you. It helps you reveal and overcome your weak points and distractions.

8. Use Both Focused and Diffused Thinking

Focused thinking takes advantage of your prefrontal cortex to concentrate on an individual thing, however, it doesn’t let other parts of your brain work. On the other hand, diffused thinking lets even unrelated thoughts coming from different parts of your brain which sometimes helps you think generally and out of the box to find the better solution.

For instance, Magnus Carlsen who is currently the No 1 chess player in the world. Back into his teens, when he was only 13 years old, he played against Garry Kasparov who was considered the best chess player of all time. During the match, Magnus gets up and walk to other tables, in fact, he is using diffused thinking-letting all the other parts of your brain work and bring new ideas.
